Reminds me a little of 'Reason with them or run them through with the sword.'
ReplyDeleteSounds a bit like, well, overkill.
ReplyDeleteSadly, when suicide bombers could be anyone, even women and children (as used by the enemy), it is a perfectly sound and sensible strategy. Indeed, it is also the same one--in spirit--that we used in Afghanistan. It is not pleasant to say, but it is entirely rational. Additionally, it is similar to the one we used as police: Be polite, be professional, but because you never know how a person will react or what will set them off, always have a plan and be ready to take down and contain every single person that you meet. That way, you are always ready if things go south.

ReplyDeleteDuffelblog is always worth reading.
More Mattis quotes, you have to take into account where and to who his words were spoken.

I don't know why anyone should be confused or upset about this. The General's words are how Marines are supposed to think all of the time. He had to remind us of this because we were being asked to curb our ROEs to win hearts and minds. It also makes perfect when you're a colonial power trying to export democracy and respect for the rule of law and human rights.
ReplyDeleteIf you're unfamiliar, or don't believe that evil imperialist warmongers have any good intentions, just ask Haerter or Dupre how they feel about giving locals the benefit of the doubt (being polite) instead of killing them for approaching too close, too quickly. Oh wait, you can't because they're dead. Killed by terrorist insurgents using our kindness as a vulnerability.
Doesn't anyone have a sense of humor these days. Doesn't the juxtaposition strike anyone as worth a smile?

I thought it was a James Bond quote at 1st glance.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Mr. Flynn, on being nominated National Security Advisor by our presumptive next President.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed your work but I would never have guessed you were a general.
Only in general, not in specific.
