If They'd Had This Many Every Sunday

this would not be the closing mass for the building.

  1. This reminds me of a story I heard years before I entered seminary from a priest giving the mission appeal at my home parish. Allentown had just finished the Synod and we were beginning to close parishes. He mentioned that at one point during his priesthood he had served in a chancery and had had to go and close parishes.

After the final Mass at one parish, a lady came up to him and said, "I don't see why you have to close MY parish."

He asked her in response, "Do you have any sons?"

    "I have 5 sons."

"Did you ever encourage any of them to be priests?"

"No! I would never want one of my sons to be a priest!"

"That's why we're closing YOUR parish."

At times, religions priests get to say the things that diocesan priests think but cannot voice.

  2. I sit each Sunday in a very 'modern', somewhat aesthetically sterile church - my beloved home parish, St. Alphonsus Ligouri, Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana - and I struggle with envy, seeing these beautiful old churches closing. I would love to go to Mass in a building like that.
